Walkers Club Newsletter

Congratulations Walkers! We are pleased to announce that the walking miles for 2007, (January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007), have been tallied. The Arlington Heights Senior Center Walkers Club successfully walked 7,742 miles! This impressive mileage was accomplished by 26 walkers. Take a bow and be proud! This past year we walked a total of 3,792 days and 921 of those days were walked at the Senior Center. We encourage you to walk at the Senior Center but do not forget to log those miles from outdoors too. Regardless of the place you walk, keep on walking! You should be proud of the boost you are giving to your overall health. We are PROUD of you!!! New walkers are always welcome at any time during the walking year. New walkers should complete a registration form at the Walkers Club desk in the Health Clinic and begin a log sheet, which can be found in the Log Book. You will receive, by mail, an assigned walker number on your new Walkers Club Membership Card. Once you have logged your first 25 walking days at the Senior Center, you will be eligible for a Walkers Club T-Shirt! This year we will be exercising our bodies and our minds as we walk along Route 66. Our goal is to tally all of our miles as a team each month and determine if we achieved the total miles between each Route 66 stop. Each month we will feature a new destination and the number of miles it would take to get there. Set your goal for what ever your fitness level prefers. Watch in each edition of the Arlington Heights Senior Center Newsletter to learn facts and trivia questions about our walking tour destinations. Don’t forget to log your miles each month. Enjoy the tour!!! For Motivation to Walk More… Use a pedometer, which is a small step-counting device that clips onto your belt or straps onto your wrist. A recent analysis of 26 studies, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association , found that pedometer users walked about an extra mile a day, on average, and increased their overall physical activity by 27%. They also lost a little more weight and lowered their blood pressure over an average of 18 weeks. It’s important to have a goal, such as 10,000 steps a day, the researchers noted. If you’re not used to walking a lot, start by adding 1,00 to 2,000 more steps to your daily activity. A good pedometer costs about $20 to $30. Cheap pedometers tend not to be accurate.
